Name change to honour ‘great son of Sri Lanka’

The Sri Lanka Institute of International Relations (SLIIR) is to be renamed Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute of International Relations and Strategic Studies, in honour of the contribution made by the late Minister towards the establishment of the institute. Minister Kadirgamar worked tirelessly to establish a strategic studies institute in Sri Lanka.

The name change is to be done on a proposal made by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse, who said of the late Minister, “the contribution made to safeguard the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Sri Lanka in his capacity as the country’s Foreign Minister is invaluable. His role in elevating Sri Lanka to its true identity has enabled Sri Lanka to portray itself as a respectable nation in the international scene”.

He further emphasized the need to continue the work of the late FM “to honour the memory of this great son of Sri Lanka” and that the name change would also recognize the dedication with which Minister Kadirgamar nurtured this institute.

It was also proposed that the Government erect a statue of the late Minister in a prominent place in Colombo.
