Samurdhi scheme could be a model - ILO Chief tells Kumaratunga

Mr. Juan Somavia, Director-General of the International Labour Organization [ILO] called on President Chandrika Kumaratunga at her New York hotel suite yesterday afternoon [16th September]. Mr. Somavia invited Sri Lanka to play a greater role following its election to the governing body of the ILO.

The President briefed the ILO Director General of Sri Lanka’s Samurdhi Scheme as a youth employment programme and one which envisages to generate a 100,000 self employment opportunities. Mr. Juan Somavia said that such a programme could be model that merits emulation around the developing world.

The creation an employment organization in Sri Lanka for best practices in employer employee relations was also discussed. Associated with President Kumaratunga at today’s discussions were Foreign Secretary H M G S Palihakkara and Sri Lanka’s Permanent Representative to the UN Prasad Kariyawasam.
