President Kumaratunga confers with Bangladeshi Premier and UNDP chief

President Chandrika Kumaratunga on Friday (16th September) met Mr. Kemal Dervis who assumed office as the UNDP Administrator in May this year. President Kumaratunga congratulated the former Turkish Finance Minister and senior World Bank official and wished him success in his new UN role.

The President thanked the UNDP for the assistance to Sri Lanka in the aftermath of the tsunami disaster in December last year and its continued support and involvement in Sri Lanka 's recovery from the natural disaster.

The President and her team of officials discussed the UNDP's support in Sri Lanka's rural development and the improvement of housing and health amenities in the estates sector. The CWC leader Arumugam Thondaman was associated with the President in these discussions.

The President also held one to one discussions with Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia of Bangladesh. During this meeting, at the UN head Quarters, President Kumaratunga reconfirmed her participation in the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation [SAARC] scheduled to be held in Dhaka in November.

The President thanked Prime Minister Khaleda for Bangladesh's assistance after the tsunami in December. They also discussed strengthening of the United Nations.

The Lankan President told the Bangladeshi Prime Minister that her country would field a candidate for the post of UN Secretary General to be vacant in December next year.
