Reconciliation and peace efforts marred by LTTE belligerence – President at UNGA

President Chandrika Kumaratunga repeated her call to the World Community to exert pressure on the LTTE to respect democratic norms in her address to the 60th Session of the UN General Assembly on Saturday 17th September.

Kumaratunga said “A peace process cannot, and does not operate in a vacuum….. Peace should include commitment and good conduct of all parties to a conflict”. She appealed to the world body “Let us resolve to commit ourselves collectively on this solemn occasion of the 60th Anniversary of our Organization to act together in the interest of humankind in order that we strive to eliminate the three scourges of poverty, disease and terrorism” .
