Full text of the letter

His Excellency Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam
President of India

Excellency,

The Government and people of Sri Lanka join me in conveying to the Government and the people of India, and particularly to those in Jammu and Kashmir, Our heartfelt sympathies on the significant loss of lives and devastation caused by the earthquake and the subsequent landslides on Saturday, 8th October 2005.

We are aware that the immediate priority would be the rescue operations. Our hopes are for the immediate success of the endeavour, and for the speedy rescue of those who are missing.

We continue to remember with deep gratitude the immediate and overwhelmingly abundant assistance rendered by India to Sri Lanka during the Indian Ocean tsunami disaster less than 10 months ago. We know that the Government and the people of India possess the national resolve and the capacities to afford generous solace to those affected by the earthquake, while effectively commencing the task of reconstruction.

Please accept, Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration.

Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga
President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka
