[October 11, 2005 - 5.00 GMT]

The Government of Sri Lanka has pledged a sum of US$ 100,000 in assistance for the earthquake victims of Pakistan. The donation would assist the ongoing relief efforts in the aftermath of the October 8th quake. President Chandrika Kumaratunga in her condolence message to President General Pervez Musharaff expressed her shock and deep distress at the unprecedented loss of life and destruction Pakistan has had to suffer. President Kumaratunga went on to say that the people and the Government of Sri Lanka express their solidarity with Pakistan at this time of national grief.

The President also wrote to the President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam of India expressing her sympathies and recalled with deep gratitude the immediate and overwhelmingly abundant assistance rendered to Sri Lanka after the tsunami disaster in December last year.
