Heightened security for main Presidential candidates
[October 20, 2005 - 9.00 GMT]
A Special
Committee was appointed by President Chandrika Kumaratunga in the first
week of August this year to review all aspects of security provided to
the two main contenders for the Presidency.
Following the
findings of this Committee of high ranking Police and Security Forces
personnel, the President directed that all shortcomings be addressed
immediately. Security for the two candidates was thus strengthened and
they were provided additional security personnel, vehicles and other
logistics as directed by the President.
In addition to
these measures the Prime Minister has also been provided a contingent of
trained and experienced personnel from the Presidential Security
Division.
Minister Ratnasiri
Wickremanayake was directed to personally contact Opposition Leader
Ranil Wickremesinghe and inform him of the recommendations of the
Committee and to adopt measures to meet the inadequacies in Mr.
Wickremesinghe’s security.
Security has also
been enhanced for other Leaders and the Prime Ministerial nominees of
the two major political groupings.
