Oxfam and its partner organization Education International are to rebuild 12 tsunami damaged schools identified by the Education Ministry located in the coastal areas from Mullaitivu to Galle. The foundation stone for one such school at Ahangama in the Galle District was laid on Friday 28th October by Oxfam International’s Lead Regional Manager Chris Eijkemans at Sariputra Maha Vidiyalaya. Mr. Eijkemans said his organization considers education as the backbone for a healthy development of the society and is committed to supporting this process.  The Education Ministry, he said, had a say in the design of the schools that Oxfam would rebuild. “We will meet the criteria that the government demands,” he said.

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Oxfam (Novib), Education International and the Education Ministry for the reconstruction of the 12 schools. The schools to be rebuilt are all along the tsunami devastated coastal areas, one in Galle, one in Matara, one school with buildings in two different locations in Kalutara three in Trincomalee, two in Batticaloa, one in Ampara and two in Mullaitivu.  Oxfam and its partner organization plan to spend 450 Million Rupees on the project.
