TNA disrupts Parliament for second day
[January 18, 2006 - 9.00 GMT]
Members of the
pro-LTTE Tamil National Alliance (TNA) today disrupted the sittings of
the Sri Lanka Parliament for the second consecutive day. TNA members of
parliament were protesting the assassination of fellow parliamentarian
Joseph Pararajasingham while at midnight service at church in the
eastern town of Batticaloa on December 25th 2005. President
Mahinda Rajapaksa has instructed a special inquiry to be conducted into
the assassination.
Members of the TNA,
which is considered a proxy of the LTTE, who claim that the LTTE is the
sole representative of the Tamils, launched their protest in parliament
yesterday – January 17, when the House sat for the first time this year.
TNA members carrying placards protesting the killing of Mr. Joseph
Pararajasingham prevented the Speaker from taking his seat. The Speaker,
who later adjourned parliament for ten minutes to consult with party
leaders, was again prevented from conducting proceedings due to the
vociferous protests and disruptive behaviour of the TNA members. The
Speaker then adjourned parliament till 9.30 am today.
When sessions began
today, the TNA members again began protesting and creating a major
disturbance in the House. One TNA members even sat on the Speaker’s
Chair. This repeated disruption of proceeding by the TNA led to the
Speaker adjourning the House again till tomorrow,
January 19, 2006.
Despite the disruption the Government was able to some items on the
Order Paper for the day.
