All Party Conference on national issue meets today

[January 19, 2006 - 3.30 GMT]

The All Party Conference summoned by President Mahinda Rajapaksa to seek a consensus in the South to solve the ethnic issue and restore peace in the country takes place today (19).

Members of Government and Opposition parties will meet with the President at Temple Trees today. This is a sequel to the meetings the President had separately with leaders and representatives of political parties in the South.

Each political party has been requested to send up to five delegates to the talks. In addition there will also be representatives of the different religions, as well as those of civil society organizations working for peace.

This all party conference is in keeping with the decision of President Rajapaksa to seek consensual agreement in the South on proposals that could be placed before the LTTE at proposed talks to end the war and bring a permanent solution to the ethnic conflict and achieve a lasting peace.

Among the political parties participating in today's meeting will be the SLFP and other parties that comprise the People's Alliance and the EPDP;  parties from the opposition will include the UNP, JVP , JHU, the Up Country People's Front.

It is the expectation of President Rajapaksa that it will be possible to arrive at a consensus among political opinion in the South and work towards a common policy to be presented to the LTTE, particularly in view of the overall demand for peace among the Sri Lankan public.
