[January 20, 2006 - 3.45 GMT]

Three policemen and a civilian were killed and 43 others, including civilians and military personnel were injured, when suspected LTTE cadres exploded two more claymore mines in separate incidents in Eastern Batticaloa and Trincomalee, yesterday (19).

Military sources said the incident at Batticaloa took place at Thandaweli when a claymore mine fixed to a motorcycle was set off by remote control around 5 pm yesterday when a military truck carrying military and police personnel passed by. Three policemen and civilian were killed, and 13 policemen, seven soldiers and three civilians were injured. The civilian victims were those in the vicinity when the blast took place.

All injured persons were rushed to the Batticaloa hospital. Five of them were later airlifted to Colombo as their condition was critical.

The Batticaloa attack took place an hour after another claymore mine attack on a Navy jeep in Trincomalee. In this incident, three sailors, a policeman and ten civilians were injured. The claymore mine fixed to a push bicycle at the Anuradhapura junction at Trincomalee was also detonated by remote control.

Also in Batticaloa a suspect LTTE cadre threw a hand grenade at Woman Police Constable returning after traffic duty last morning, injuring her and seven others.

Police and security services personnel conducted search operations in the areas where the attacks took place.
