TNA prevents condolence motion on Lakshman Kadirgamar

[January 20, 2006 - 3.30 GMT]

Disturbances by members of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) in parliament for the third consecutive day prevented the motion of condolence on the late Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar, slain by the LTTE in August 2005 being taken up for discussion.

The discussion on the motion of condolence was put off for February 1, 2006 when the House is due to meet again.

Members of the TNA continued their protests and disturbances in parliament for the third consecutive day protesting the assassination of TNA parliamentarian Mr. Joseph Pararajasingham a, while at midnight church service in Batticaloa on December 25, 2005.

The TNA parliamentary group leader Mr. R Sampanthan did not heed a special appeal by the Speaker W. J. M. Lokubandara to control his party members.

The shouts of "We don"t want a murderous government" by TNA members found JVP members responding with shouts of "We don't want murderers". The TNA members who were disrupting the proceedings carried out a mock funeral in the House, bringing one of its members draped in a white cloth, laying his body on the well of the House and pretending to wail over the body.

In the midst of the commotion which enabled parliament to sit for only ten minutes, the State of Emergency imposed after the assassination of Lakshman Kadirgamar in August last year, was passed for another month.
