Search for criminal elements at Borella

[January 22, 2006 - 8.15 GMT]

The Police assisted by the Army launched a cordon and search operation in the Borella area of Colombo today, in its continuing campaign against criminal elements and those involved in the narcotics trade.

The search operation is still in progress. It is part of the recently launched campaign by the police to track down on criminal elements and those engaged in the narcotics trade.

It is believed that they are over 50 underworld criminal gangs operating in and around Colombo, and more in other urban areas. A large number of them are also linked to those of the illegal narcotics trade.

This search operation is part of the anti-crime campaign launched on the orders of President Mahinda Rajapaksa to help eliminate crime and bring drug dealers to book. Such search operations will be carried out in other areas, too, a police spokesman said.
