No reports of abductions to Police or Military - Government

[February 1, 2006 - 5.00 GMT]

The Government categorically denies media reports that five members of the Tamil Rehabilitation Organization (TRO), had been abducted on the A 11 road yesterday (Jan 31) at a place close to the Welikanda military checkpoint.

There were no records of statements or complaints of such abductions to the Police and Army detachments in that area. The only available record of the alleged incident was a telephone call made by Pulidevan of the LTTE to the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM), yesterday.

Government confirmed that no arrests or detentions of such persons, as described in the media, had been made by the Police or the Security Forces.

On the sport investigations carried out by the Army and Police yesterday found no evidence of any such abductions in the location described.

However, following these media reports the Government is continuing further investigations into the matter. The Inspector General of Police has detailed a special team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to probe these allegations and obtain statements from those in the TRO office in Colombo.

The TRO is a well known fund raising organization of the LTTE, and its activities have been banned in some western countries and are under investigation in other countries.
