Main opposition’s Colombo list rejected

[February 16, 2006 - 11.00 GMT]

The Elections Secretariat today rejected the UNP’s nomination list for Colombo, for the upcoming Local Government (LG) Elections. The list was rejected, as at least one of the candidates nominated was not over 18 years of age on June 18, 2004.

The nominations to elect representatives for 330 local bodies for a four-year term closed at noon today.

The UNP, Sri Lanka’s main opposition party twice recently attempted to postpone the LG Elections, through application to the Court, which were rejected due to faulty preparation of petitions to Court.

The Colombo Municipal Council, which administers the commercial capital of Sri Lanka, has been controlled by the UNP for over 20 years.
