Govt. delegation leaves for Geneva

[February 21, 2006 - 11.00 GMT]

The Government delegation led by Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva left for Geneva yesterday for peace talks with the LTTE to be held February 22 and 23. The delegation comprises three more cabinet ministers. The talks are to be held at the Chatueau de Bossey in Celigny, northwestern Switzerland.

The LTTE delegation left for Geneva on Friday, February 17, 2006.

The resumption of peace talks after a three-year gap was hailed by the United States as a means of finding a lasting solution to the decades old ethnic conflict. The talks are aimed at strengthening the Norwegian backed ceasefire signed, February 22, 2002.

Earlier this month President Mahinda Rajapaksa chaired a workshop to obtain the views and enhance the awareness of all stakeholders with regard to the talks.

Delegation head Minister de Silva prior to departure said, "We are hoping to make the best use of the opportunity in order to try and achieve lasting peace in the country."
