The Army again scotches false news on website
[February 24, 2006 - 9.30 GMT]

The Sri Lankan Army yesterday contradicted a report on the Tamilnet website regarding an alleged “artillery firing”. This follows an earlier denial by the Army regarding another report claiming an alleged murder of an LTTE cadre published on the same website. The Army categorically denied the contents of the above reports and called upon both local and foreign community not to be misled by such blatant lies.

The current Tamilnet report quoting LTTE Peace Secretariat officials claimed that an artillery shell fired by the Vadamarachchi Army camp fell inside un-cleared areas, held by Tamil Tigers close to a village where displaced people are living.

The Army website states, “this fabricated story with sinister motives is also not very much different from the two other contradictory stories on Wednesday (22) & Monday (20) on the same Website regarding an alleged “murder” and another alleged “claymore mine” respectively pasted hours before the Geneva talks commenced.

The Sri Lanka Army with its wealth of experience, as a battle-hardened professional organ would under no circumstances prevail upon its soldiers to fire even a random round of an artillery shell that would cause a wanton destruction, specifically at the time both the Government and the LTTE are talking.”
