The Co-Chairs of the Tokyo Donor
Conference welcomed the outcome of the Geneva talks held between the
Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL) and the LTTE last month. The GoSL and the
LTTE are scheduled to hold another round of talks in Geneva from the 19th
to the 21st of April.
In a press statement they welcomed the
commitment from both parties to respect and uphold the Ceasefire
Agreement (CFA) and as well as the parties’ reconfirmation to cooperate
fully and respect the rulings of the SLMM. The Co-Chairs also noted that
the talks included issues concerning the welfare of children in the
North East, including child recruitment.
“The Co-Chairs welcome the parties’
commitment to ensure that there will be no violence, killings, and
operations by armed groups, in accordance with the Ceasefire Agreement,”
states the release.
While congratulating both sides on the
constructive approach taken the Co-Chairs stressed the importance on the
commitments being implemented at the ground level so as to build an
environment conducive to a lasting peace.
The Co-Chairs while pledging to assist
both parties with their peace efforts, thanked both the Norwegian
Government and the Swiss Government for their contributions.
The Co-Chairs consist of the European
Union and the governments of Japan, Norway and the United States.
