Army refutes fabricated story

[March 6, 2006 - 10.30 GMT]

The Army has rejected allegations that it was involved in the incident reported on a pro-LTTE website that claims “army personnel” were involved in the assault on one of the LTTE points at Vavunathivu, 5.2 km southwest of Batticaloa town in un-cleared areas. Two LTTE cadres were killed in the incident.

The army while vehemently denying any involvement said the story was fabricated and false, as no Security Forces personnel entered un-cleared areas.

The story that appeared on Saturday (March 4th) claimed that “heavily armed men” carried out the assault and then reportedly crept back into areas under military control. Another story regarding the same incident claims it was “the army personnel” who were involved in the attack.

The Army further says that Security Forces have never under any circumstances aided or abetted any illegal armed group.

This follows similar reports of supposed harassment of fishermen by the Navy. This story too is refuted by the Army as “far from the truth”.
