Reconstruction work on tsunami ravaged Galle Harbour starts

[March 7, 2006 - 09.30 GMT]

The laying of the foundation stone for the Galle Fisheries Harbour funded by the Government of Japan took place yesterday.  The Galle Fisheries Harbour was among one of the worst affected by the 2004 tsunami.

The estimated cost of the construction is approximately Rs. 559 million. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) assisted in the preparation of the designing of the Harbour while the Japan International Cooperation Systems (JICS) will supervise implementation of the project.

Sri Lanka’s fisheries sector was severely affected by the tsunami and a large number of boats, fishing gear and infrastructure were destroyed. As a result a large number of coastal communities whose livelihood depended on the fisheries industry were badly affected.

The Galle Fisheries Harbour will be reconstructed with new facilities such as an Ice Plant with a production capacity of 50 tons per day, Cold Storage, Quay wall, slipway for fishing vessels for safe navigation, winch house, auction hall, two storied building for the office of the Ceylon Fisheries Harbour Cooperation and a canteen for harbour staff.

Immediately after the tsunami, Japan extended US$ 80 million under the Japanese Non-Project Grant Aid for relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction. Out of this total grant, US$20 million has been allocated to the fisheries sector considering the economical and social importance of the industry. The Tangalle Fisheries Harbour will also be reconstructed under this Grant.
