Gunmen fire on troops and flee [March 22, 2006- 11.00 GMT]

Troops at a duty point in the Manalkadu area, about 32 km Northeast of Jaffna had to open retaliatory fire this afternoon (12.45 pm) after being fired upon by a group of LTTE men. The LTTE attack failed to cause any injuries or damages.

According to the Army an immediate cordon and search operation was launched by troops to track down fleeing LTTE men, during which one T-56 weapon was recovered.

While the SLMM was immediately informed of this latest ceasefire violation by the LTTE, the Jaffna Police is investigating the incident.
