Villagers flee to save children from conscription [March 24, 2006- 9.20 GMT]

Twenty-five civilians including 13 children below the age of ten have fled their village due to intensified LTTE harassments. The six families have sought refuge with the Batticaloa Police, after vacating their homesteads in the un-cleared areas of Thoppigala in Batticaloa yesterday.

The villagers have claimed that the LTTE was attempting to abduct and conscript their children, mostly in their teens, for training.

Army troops in Batticaloa have made arrangements to provide food and shelter for them at the Batticaloa Paddy Marketing Board Refugee Centre.

The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission has been informed about this incident.
