meets President; travels to Kilinochchi tomorrow

Peace envoy
Yasushi Akashi met with President Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees
today, for an hour long discussion on how to create a suitable
environment for the resumption of peace talks. He will travel to
Kilinochchi tomorrow for a meeting with LTTE Political Wing Leader S P
Thamilselvam.
After the meeting
the Japanese peace envoy told the journalists that he was committed to
working towards restarting the stalled peace talks between the
Government and the LTTE.
Mr. Akashi arrived
in the island on Saturday (6th) to discuss with the Government and the
parties concerned, the current situation of the peace process.
According to a
spokesperson from the Japanese Embassy, Akashi also met with Minister
Nimal Sripala De Silva, Minister of Healthcare and Nutrition and Chief
Government Negotiator for Geneva Talks, representatives of the JVP and
UNP.
