International community should ban LTTE fund raising [May 10, 2006 - 7.30 GMT]

Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera on a two-day official visit to India said the international community should ban the LTTE from raising funds in foreign countries. Minister Samaraweera held talks with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and other Indian leaders.

Speaking to reporters in India yesterday Minister Samaraweera said stringent measures should be taken to cut off the cash flow to the LTTE, which would be the most effective way to get them to return to peace talks with the Government.

''The thing which hurts the LTTE most is the curtailment of their fundraising activities. The lifeline of the LTTE ... is raising money in Europe and in the West for terrorist activities,'' Samaraweera said.

Earlier this year in the UK the Sri Lankan FM expressed concern over the issue of illegal fund raising from the Sri Lankan diaspora living there.

The LTTE is banned in the United States, Britain, India, Australia and most recently in Canada.
