SLMM denies LTTE accusations [May 17, 2006 - 9.45 GMT]

Reacting to the LTTE suggestion that the monitors withheld evidence leading to an escalation of civilian killings in the north, the SLMM said it would not give in to pressure and make statements to satisfy any party.

Confirming an interview given to the Daily Mirror yesterday SLMM spokesperson Helen Olafsdottir described the LTTE accusations as “outrageous”, saying the SLMM had nothing to gain by withholding evidence, as it is the mandate to investigate and rule against such cases.

The LTTE claimed the murder of 13 civilians in Kayts last Saturday (13th) could have been avoided if the SLMM had made public the evidence it had on the involvement of security forces and paramilitaries with the recent civilian killings.

Olafsdottir said the SLMM would not be “pushed and bullied” into making statements about any killings before they established clear facts and investigated the incident properly.

She said the team of monitors in Jaffna had been working hard on the cases.
