Resolution by the Members of the European Parliament on 18 May 2006
regarding the situation in Sri Lanka.
EU: LTTE
not sole representatives of the Tamil people. Calls for immediate stop
to LTTE illegal fund raising
[May 19, 2006 - 11.35 GMT]
The European Union (EU)
yesterday called on the LTTE to allow “political pluralism and alternate
democratic voices” as the LTTE did not represent all the Tamil people of
Sri Lanka.
It also called on its
member states “to do everything in their capacity in order to stop all
illegal attempts by the LTTE to uphold a system of forced taxation among
sections of the Tamil community living in the European Union.”
In its resolution on
Sri Lanka the EU condemned the LTTE’s unilateral refusal to participate
in the second round talks that were scheduled for April this year and
urgently called on the LTTE to resume peace negotiations with the
government. It severely condemned the renewed campaign of attacks by the
LTTE.
The resolution called
on the LTTE to be prepared to decommission its weapons and to set the
stage for a final political settlement of the conflict.
Members of the EU
deplored the gross violations of the Ceasefire Agreement (CFA)
particularly the LTTE sea attack, May 11 on the Sri Lankan naval force,
which resulted in casualties and put SLMM monitors in grave danger.
The EU called for an
immediate stop to the recruitment of children as soldiers by the LTTE
and for the LTTE to release those it holds while making a declaration of
principle not to recruit any children in the future. It also urged the
government to put into place legal measures to prevent and criminalize
the practice.
The European
parliamentarians welcomed the announcement of new members of the Sri
Lanka Human Rights Commission.
