Human Rights Commissioners named [May 19, 2006 -11.30 GMT]

President Mahinda Rajapaksa appointed five new Commissioners to the Human Rights (HRC) Commission yesterday. Deshamanya P. Ramanadan, former Justice of the Supreme Court was appointed as Chairman.

D. Jayawickrema, S. G. Punchihewa, Nalani Abeywardena and M.T.M Basik are the rest of the members.

The HRC of Sri Lanka started work in 1997 under the Human Rights Commission Act No. 21 of 1996. It combined the functions of two other institutions which preceded it– the Commission for Elimination of Discrimination and Monitoring of Human Rights and the Human Rights Task Force. The Commission however is vested with additional powers and responsibilities.
