Local government elections tomorrow [May 19, 2006 - 11.40 GMT]

The Elections Secretariat today said preparations were complete for tomorrow’s (May 20th) elections for 20 local government bodies. Polling booths will open at 7 am and close at 4 pm. There will be 122 counting centers.

Colombo, Gampaha, Kandy, Galle, Batticaloa, Ampara, Kurunegala and Ratnapura are the districts in which elections are to be held. Elections to be conducted in Vavuniya have been postponed till September.

Elections to the rest of the island were conducted on the 30th of March this year, which resulted in an UPFA victory.

Tomorrow’s elections are fraught with confusion since the UNP whose candidates were legally debarred from contesting the elections is seeking to control the council through an independent group.

Earlier this week the Elections Commissioner explained there were “no provisions in law for the votes cast for a candidate having one symbol to be counted in favour of another person, especially to a person who is not contesting that election.”
