Hanssen-Bauer, Solheim in Colombo [Wednesday, May 24, 2006 - 11.00 GMT]

Norwegian special envoy Hanssen Bauer is arriving in Colombo today while Norway’s International Development Minister Erik Soheim is expected tomorrow, to hold talks with Government leaders and LTTE representatives.

They are scheduled to meet with President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Friday. Meanwhile Norwegian Ambassador Hans Brattskar met LTTE political head S.P. Thamilselvan in Kilinochchi last morning.

The visits come in the wake of an expected pronouncement, early next week, of the 25 member EU states’ decision over the LTTE ban, which will prohibit all activities by the LTTE in any of the EU states.

Peace Secretariat head Palitha Kohona told Reuters yesterday “he was disappointed the Tigers warn talks are unlikely this year given escalating clashes, but hopes a visit this week by Norwegian envoys Erik Solheim and Jon Hanssen-Bauer will help bring both sides back to talks.”
