Japan helps to develop rural roads [Thursday, May 25, 2006 - 10.00 GMT]

Japan provided a sum of Rs. 8.2 million approximately towards the project for Rehabilitation and Improvement of Rural Infrastructure Facilities for rural areas. The project will be implemented by a NGO engaged in facilitating self-help oriented development to the poor and disadvantaged communities in remote areas of Sri Lanka, Samastha Lanka Praja Sanwardana Manadalaya (SLPSM).

Ambassador of Japan Akio Suda at the signing ceremony of the grant contract yesterday said Japan was extending assistance to the Government’s efforts towards poverty alleviation and rural development.

“Moneragala district is classified as one of the least developed districts in Sri Lanka. Therefore, support for basic human needs including safe drinking water, food, and basic infrastructure such as, roads and bridges are essential to improve the livelihood of these people,” he said.

This project is expected to contribute towards poverty reduction through the improvement of rural roads to provide better transport facilities in the Moneragala district.

The construction of the roads will be carried out with active participation of the rural communities in these areas, where over 162,000 persons will be benefited. This is the second occasion that the Government of Japan has funded SLPSM to improve rural development activities. On the first occasion grant funds were provided for the construction of 14 pre-schools, improvement of sanitary facilities and provision of drinking water wells in Hambantota, Kalutara and Moneragala districts.
