Four more officers killed in claymore mine ambush (Thursday, May 25, 2006 - 11.00 GMT]

Four police officers were killed in a claymore mine ambush in the east by suspected LTTE cadres today, in the latest in a series of attacks on the military. This attack comes barely 24 hours after three Security Forces personnel were killed in Vavuniya yesterday.

Today’s attack comes as Norway's special peace envoy is visiting Sri Lanka to meet the LTTE and government representatives in an effort restart stalled peace talks.

Norwegian Minister of International Development Erik Solheim is to meet President Mahinda Rajapaksa tomorrow (26th) before proceeding to New Delhi to discuss the situation in Sri Lanka with Indian authorities, according to an Embassy release.

“The situation in Sri Lanka in very complicated, and it is important not to have unrealistic expectations of the meetings. The visits are an important part of the preparations for the Co-Chairs Meeting in Japan, and we will have talks with both parties,” Solheim is quoted as saying.

He is due to attend the Co-chairs Meeting in Tokyo on May 30. The meeting will bring together representatives of the EU, Japan, the US and Norway for talks on how they can best assist the parties in Sri Lanka in furthering the peace talks.
