Health Minister elected to WHO executive council [Monday, May 29, 2006 -10.45 GMT]

Healthcare and Nutrition Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva was elected to the 39 member executive council of the World Health Organization at the end of its 59th Annual Session held at WHO headquarters in Geneva from 23rd to 27th May.

This 39 member Executive Council elected for a period of three years is the main body which takes decisions with regard to implementation of health care activities in various countries. 

Minister Nimal Sirpala de Silva who was elected to represent the South Asian Region  where more than 160 member countries participated at this five day session. The Minister on his election to this august assembly expressed the hope  that the WHO led health rehabilitation activities implemented following the tsunami devastation in Sri Lanka could be expedited to accrue the benefit to the victims
