President condoles with earthquake victims [Monday, May 29, 2006 -10.00 GMT]


President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday in a message of condolence to the President of Indonesia Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said he was saddened to learn of the catastrophic earthquake which caused extensive loss of life and damage to property.

A powerful earthquake, with a 6.3 magnitude flattened homes and hotels in central Indonesia early Saturday as people slept, killing more than 5000 and leaving scores more injured and homeless.
Indonesia is in a zone known as the Pacific "ring of fire", which is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity.

Excellency,

I was shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the catastrophic earthquake which occurred in the Indonesian island of Java, yesterday, causing an extensive loss of life and damage to property.

The Government and the people of Sri Lanka join me in extending to you and, through you, to the Government and the people of Indonesia, especially to the families of the victims, our heartfelt condolences.

Please accept, Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration.
