Troops, SLMM recover bodies of slain civilians[Wednesday, May 31, 2006 - 9.00 GMT]

Troops last morning with SLMM representatives recovered the remains of the twelve Sinhala villagers killed by the LTTE Monday evening. Reports confirm the victims were working as labourers at a border village around 10 km north of Welikanda in Polonnaruwa.

The civilians had reportedly gone to the Tamil dominated village of Omidiyamade for construction of an irrigational canal after they were hired on daily wages.

According to the Army armed Tamil Tiger terrorists had stormed the village, first shouted “The peace was over” and fired at the civilians at point blank range instantly killing twelve of them.

However, one civilian who managed to survive with critical injuries has later escaped with another and reported the matter to the Welikanda hospital authorities on reaching there at about 5.00 a.m. Tuesday (30). He was subsequently transferred to the Polonnaruwa hospital for further treatments.
