LTTE officially added to EU black list  [Thursday, June 1, 2006 - 8.00 GMT]

In its updated list published yesterday the European Union officially added the LTTE to its terror blacklist. The LTTE’s assets across the 25 nations of the EU will now be freezed and its money raising ability hindered.

The EU’s black list also includes the al-Qaida terror group and the militant Palestinian group Hamas. The EU said that the Tigers had "systematically ignored" its warnings to give up their armed conflict and commit to peace talks, the statement said. It further said the EU had on September 27, 2005 warned the LTTE that it was “actively considering the formal listing of the LTTE as a terror organization”.

The EU statement said it had banned the LTTE based upon the organizations actions and “sees a need for the LTTE to amend its violent course and return to peace talks”.

The EU also called upon the Government to act on President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s commitment to the culture of impunity and to clamp down on all acts of violence in government controlled areas.
