Govt. delegation leaves for Oslo talks [Monday, June 5, 2006 - 11.35 GMT]

The Government and LTTE delegations left for Oslo, Norway last evening, for two day (June 8-9) talks with the Nordic countries that contribute to the SLMM. The meeting is expected to address matters relating to operational modalities and functional attributes of the SLMM.

Helen Olafsdottir, spokesperson of the SLMM said they had not received an agenda of the talks, and believed the agenda would be decided upon in Norway. She said the safety and security of the SLMM Sea monitors would be discussed as it was a ‘huge issue’.

This issue arose after the LTTE attacked the army personnel carrier, the Pearl Cruise II, which endangered the lives of the SLMM monitors on board. SLMM sea monitoring remains suspended after the incident.

She further said methods of strengthening the role of the SLMM would be discussed so as to help the SLMM better implement the CFA.

Head of the Government Peace Secretariat Dr. Palitha Kohona is leading the four man delegation which includes Mr. Dayasiri Gomin, Chanaka Jayasekera and Vaas Goonawardena.
