Two canned fish factories to be set up in Sri Lanka [Tuesday, June 6, 2006 - 8.30 GMT]

Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Felix Perera stated that the Ministry is to negotiate with a New Zealand delegation to set up a canned fish factory in Sri Lanka.  He further said that there are other plans to construct a fish factory as a joint venture with Russia. 

The fisheries industry recorded export earnings of Rs. 3367 million during the first quarter of 2006.  It is a 34.4% growth compared to the first quarter of 2005.  5120 metric tons of fish and fishery products were exported during the first quarter of 2006. 

The earnings from the industry has shown an upwards trend throughout the year with the total earnings being Rs. 9,488 million and  Rs. 10,416 million in 2004 and 2005 respectively. 

In addition to that under the Cey – Nor Foundation, the Ministry expects to manufacture leisure boats for the export market.  According to sources Norway has placed an order for 100 boats under this project and Cey – Nor expects to complete this target within four months.
