Policemen guarding SLMM office fired at [Wednesday, June 7, 2006 - 8.00 GMT]

Two police officers providing security to the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) in Vavuniya were fired at by the LTTE last evening at about 5.00 pm injuring one of the policemen.

According to the Army the terrorists had opened fire indiscriminately towards the officers guarding the SLMM office and fled the scene immediately.

The injured police officer was rushed for treatment to hospital. The Vavuniya police and troops conducted a search in the area.

Government and LTTE representatives are currently in Oslo for two-day talks (8-9) on the safety and security of the SLMM sea monitors.
