President congratulates Murali on amazing wicket haul [Wednesday, June 7, 2006 - 10.30 GMT]

President Mahinda Rajapaksa congratulated Captain Mahela Jayawaydene, spinner Muttiah Muralitharan and the rest of the Sri Lankan cricket squad on their victory in the third test match against England in Trent Bridge on Monday (5/6).

Murali in his brilliant spell of bowling took 8 wickets for just 70 runs from 30 overs, which led to Sri Lanka’s 134 run win over England which tied the series.

Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene is reported as paying tribute to the spinner saying, “He always steps up to the plate to try to play for his friends. With a wicket like this we knew he would. He is a legend in our cricket.''

“This was one of my best performances,'' Muralitharan said. ``It's not easy to beat England in England.”

Stand-in England Captain Andew Flintoff is reported saying “We were undone by a special talent and you can’t take anything away from the way he bowled.”
