Legal panel to aid Constitutional Reforms Committee [Monday , June 12, 2006- 10.00 GMT]

President Mahinda Rajapaksa appointed a panel of Legal/Constitutional Experts to aid the sub committee on Constitutional Reforms, a committee comprising all political parties to formulate proposals for constitutional changes.

At the fifth All Party Conference held on the 2nd of this month at the Presidential Secretariat, the President met Sri Lanka's major political parties and urged them to come up with suggestions to make necessary constitutional changes to end the two decades conflict, which affects the minority ethnic groups in the country.

Apart from the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), all other political parties with a parliamentary representation supported the suggestion made by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The members of the panel are Mr. H.L. de Silva, PC, Mr. Faiz Mustapha, PC, Mr. R.K.W. Gunesekera, Attorney-at-Law, Dr. Shivaji Felix, Constitutional Law Expert, Mrs. T.R. Perera, PC, Legal Draftsman, Legal Draftsman’s Department, Dr. Roshan Perera, PC, Legal Advisor, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Jayampathy Wickremaratne, PC, Mr. Asoka Gunewardane, Chairman, Finance Commission, Mr. K.H.J. Wijaydasa, Mr. Dharmasiri Pieris and Mrs. Malkanthi Wickremasinghe, Secretary-Ministry of Constitutional Affairs (Convener).
