Sethusamudram Ship Channel Project website launched [Tuesday , June 13, 2006- 7.30 GMT]The Sethusamudram Ship Channel Project Advisory Group of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs launched the Web Site www.sscpslview.lk recently. The web site was launched by the Chairman of the Advisory Group by Mr. A. Hewage at the meeting of the Committee of Secretaries appointed by Cabinet of Ministers to study the impact of the Sethusamudram Ship Channel Project on Sri Lanka. The web site covers the following information and has an interactive section where the public could provide their opinions. The home page provides a basic plan of the project together with nine drop down menus. They cover an overview of its impact and details of the project including International Conventions applicable to the project. Sri Lanka’s response is presented covering four main areas of concern identified together with details of the Ministries and Agencies supporting the Advisory Group along with agreements and the outcome of the 1st and 2nd rounds of bilateral discussions held with India. The 3rd bilateral talks held in Colombo enumerated the comments on the Indian studies, presented concerns of Sri Lanka and highlighted the need for a joint collaborative approach in the management of the environment. A summary of the potential environmental impacts identified have been presented under the topics of Hydrodynamic Modeling, Environmental Measures for Sustainability Fisheries Resources and Livelihood Issues and Navigation Emergencies. Monitoring activities undertaken have also been presented covering ecological aspects and oceanographic parameters. Useful information relating to the project is identified in the resource pages along with Maps of the project, published articles and a news room page. A hyper link to other similar canal project has also been included. A gallery of pictures related to the project is provided. The web site will be regularly updated keeping abreast of developments.
