Demonstration to be held in Australia requesting for the banning of the LTTE [Wednesday , June 14, 2006- 8.30 GMT]

The Society for Peace, Unity and human Rights (SPUR) in Australia are organizing a demonstration urging the Australian government to ban the LTTE. According to sources the demonstration is to be held Monday, June 19, in front of the Federal Parliament in Canberra.

SPUR urges Sri Lankans living in Australia to join the demonstration to request the Australian government to ‘meaningfully and effectively ban the LTTE’, claiming that the current listing under the UN Charter is a ‘mere red herring’.

According to SPUR it wants the Tamil Tigers to be banned under the Criminal Code (1995), which “would allow the security establishment to freeze the assets of the LTTE terrorist fronts now busy under a hundred and one innocent sounding names and banners.”
