President visits Kabitigollawa, meets with the people [Thursday , June 15, 2006- 1.10 GMT]

President Mahinda Rajapaksa today visited the site of the claymore mine attack, which took place near the town of Kebitigollawa, (270 km /168 miles approx. from Colombo) in the Anuradhapura district. More than 61 innocent civilians, including children died in the attack which targeted a civilian bus this morning.

The President inspected the bus and met the friends and relatives of the victims of the blast. He advised the relevant officials to look into the welfare of the people of the area.

President Rajapaksa also visited the injured at the Anuradhapura hospital. Earlier he had directed that blood and medical supplies be supplied to the hospital immediately. The President directed the relevant authorities to look into the funeral arrangements of the deceased, the medical needs of the injured as well as the wellbeing of the people of the area.

While sending his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims the President said the government would never let the peace process be disrupted. He said this was despite the fact the LTTE had targeted innocent civilians in their attack. The President said the government would see to the safety of the people.

Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, Chief Minister Berty Premalal Dissayanayke, MPs Tissa Karaliyadda, Duminda Dissanayake, Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga and Defence Secretary Gothabaya  Rajapaksa also accompanied the President.
