Security strengthened following suicide blast [Tuesday, June 27, 2006 - 9.00 GMT]

The Army Headquarters announced yesterday that security arrangements have been strengthened in the country to maintain law and order. This follows yesterday’s suicide blast that killed Maj-Gen. Parami Kulatunga and three others in Pannipitiya.

Security Forces will accordingly re-activate or re-introduce all security measures in government-controlled areas that were fully operational before the Cease-Fire Agreement (CFA) came into effect several years ago.

Road barriers and checkpoints will be reintroduced with immediate effect in government controlled areas with all vehicles transporting consumer goods and other items into cleared areas being thoroughly checked.

The Army requests the public to co-operate with the Security Forces and the Police in view of the importance of these measures at national level.
