Sri Lanka, Maldives sign agreed minutes of the first session of Joint Commission

Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera and Dr. Ahmed Shaheed, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives signed the Agreed Minutes of the First Session of the Sri Lanka-Maldives Joint Commission yesterday in Male. The two Ministers led their respective delegations to the Joint Commission Session, comprising senior officials.

The Joint Commission reviewed the existing bilateral ties between the two countries with a view to expanding further the political, economic and cultural relations as well as the people-to-people contact, by widening and deepening the existing links and also by venturing into new areas of cooperation.

The Joint Commission agreed to promote the existing economic relationship by, enhancing trade and investment; concluding an investment promotion and protection agreement; the exchange of trade delegations; the establishment of Joint Business Councils in Sri Lanka and the Maldives; tourism promotion; corporation in the fisheries sector; furthering links in the educations sector; and generating more employment opportunities for Sri Lankans in the Maldives amongst other proposals.

During his first visit to the Maldives Minister Mangala Samaraweera called on President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom of the Maldives and held official discussions with his Maldivian counterpart, Dr. Ahmed Shaheed.

Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner in the Maldives, M L M Ali Farook and the Maldivian High Commissioner in Colombo, Dr. Mohamed Asim and senior officials from both countries participated in the meetings.
