Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera is on official bilateral visits to China and the Republic of Korea from July 12-19, 2006. During his stay in China the Minister will hold official talks with the Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing, and also meet the Chinese Commercial Minister Bo Xilai, Chairman of Chinese Tourism Administration Shao Qiwei and other Chinese leaders, as well as call on Prime Minister Wen Jiabao. Discussions with Chinese leaders will focus on a number of bilateral projects including the implementation of the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant and the National Performing Arts Theatre. The Foreign Minister is also scheduled to have preparatory discussions with the Chinese government regarding the forthcoming State visit of President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Minister Samaraweera will deliver a lecture on the future orientation of China-Sri Lanka relations at the Chinese Institute of International Studies. During the visit to Korea, the Minister will hold discussions with South Korean Foreign Minister Banki Moon and other leaders. Tsunami reconstruction projects and economic cooperation will figure in the discussions. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs these will be the FM’s first official visits to China and Korea after he assumed office. The Minister will be accompanied by Presidential Advisor Dr. Jayantha Dhanapala, Secretary to the Treasury Dr. P.B. Jayasundera and senior Foreign Ministry officials.
