BOI softens import ban [Friday, July 14, 2006 - 9.35 GMT]

The Board of Investment of Sri Lanka (BOI) announced an apparent softening of its original over the ban of duty free imports of certain items.

It has decided to extend the duty free facility of construction of items agreements signed prior to the 15th of June, 2005.  For projects that have been approved and Agreements not signed prior to this date, time has been granted till 15th July, 2006 to sign the Agreements in order that they will be eligible for the duty free concessions. 

The BOI had earlier banned duty free imports of cement, asbestos sheets, wires and cables, PVC pipes and fittings, paints, furniture, aluminium extrusions, tiles, electrical fittings, lubricants and steel.
