No Sri Lankans reported affected in Lebanon – Ministry of Foreign Affairs
[Monday, July 17, 2006 - 10.30 GMT]

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in consultation with the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) has kept an around the clock watch on the situation and safety of Sri Lankan nationals in Lebanon. As of now there have been no reports of any Sri Lankans being affected.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Sri Lanka Embassy in Beirut is being strengthened with additional local staff and SLBFE officials to handle the inquiries and assist people who seek assistance.

The Embassy has also made arrangements with the assistance of humanitarian organizations in Beirut to provide safety and shelter to some Sri Lankans who sought assistance.

The Government is in touch with authorities of countries concerned with the situation in Lebanon regarding further action on contingency planning and for safety of Sri Lankans there.

For the time being the advice of the Mission is for Sri Lankan nationals to avoid travel to Lebanon. If the need arises assistance will be obtained from international organizations such as IOM and concerned governments with whom GOSL is in touch through diplomatic channels for those who wish to return.

The information/help desk will continue to function at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, SLBFE and the Sri Lankan Embassy in Beirut.
