Jathika Saviya programme making progress in providing facilities to villages under threat [Thursday, July 20, 2006 - 12.00 GMT]

Jathika Saviya programme, a brainchild of President Mahinda Rajapaksa has been successful in solving the problems faced by villages under threat.

With aid from Government and non-Governmental organizations a committee of the Jathika Saviya programme from the President’s office has during the past two months conducted surveys in villages in the North and East to find out the problems faced by the villagers and to find solutions to those problems.

The Jathika Saviya programme has made much progress towards solving the problems these villages face without proper roads, electricity, telephones, healthcare, education, transportation, housing and construction, agriculture and irrigation.

A progress review meeting of the Jathika Saviya programme was held Tuesday, July 18 at the Defence Ministry headed by Senior Advisor to the President, Basil Rajapaksa. Ministers and MPs representing the North and East areas participated in the meeting.

The problems faced by people in the North and East were discussed at length and it was agreed upon to consider them as problems of national importance and that politicians and government officials should work towards solving them.

It was also decided that the government would purchase the necessary equipment needed to develop the roads and that shortcomings in the health sector of the North central provincial council would be filled. It was further decided to give permanent appointments to volunteer graduate teachers and thereby solve the teacher shortage problem in the area.

On the initiative of the President buses and ambulances have already been given to villages under threat, while home guards would be recruited under this programme to strengthen security for these villages.

The aim of the programme is to provide these villages under threat with the same facilities other villages in the country enjoy.
