300 to arrive in the island today from Damascus – Foreign Ministry  [Friday, July 21, 2006 - 9.00 GMT]

112 Sri Lankans have already reached Damascus, while a further 193 will join them today said an official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, regarding the repatriation of Sri Lankans from Lebanon. They were transported by road via four buses.

The 300 odd Sri Lankans are currently awaiting a special SriLankan airlines flight to bring them back to Sri Lanka, this evening.

The official further said that further airlifting would be done based on the situation in Lebanon and whether further attacks are carried out by Israel. The current batch of Sri Lankans in Damascus, were those who reported to the Sri Lankan and Caritas run safe houses indicating their wish to return to the island.

The Sri Lankan Embassy and Consul in Syria have provided the necessary facilities in Damascus for the Sri Lankans until their departure. Those at the Embassy in Beirut are being accommodated, and provided with the essential facilities, including food, basic health care and local transport at centers run with the assistance of Caritas.

The Embassy is working closely with the local authorities in Beirut and humanitarian agencies such as Caritas and others, with regard to additional safe shelters in places of religious worship that could be used, should the number of Sri Lankans seeking shelter increase.

The Ministry is working in close coordination with the Ministry of Labour, the Sri Lankan Foreign Employment Bureau (SLBFE) and Sri Lankan Embassies in the region. Additional funds have been allocated from the SLBFE for food, temporary shelter, health, local transport etc for the affected Sri Lankans.
